A former Texas sheriff has been sentenced to more than five years in federal prison for helping Mexican drug traffickers smuggle drugs through the US on the border with Mexico in exchange for cash.

Former Starr county sheriff Reymundo "Rey" Guerra was sentenced today to 64 months in prison and four years of supervised release.

FBI agents arrested Guerra at his office in October. He and more than a dozen others were indicted by a federal grand jury following an operation called Carlito's Weigh.

Prosecutors say Guerra made it easier for the Gulf Cartel to move drugs into the United States. He pleaded guilty in May to conspiring to distribute narcotics.
