DJ Yella, born in Compton, California in December 1967, is an American DJ, music producer, and film director. He is known for being a founding member of the gangsta rap group N.W.A. and a member of the World Class Wreckin’ Cru. DJ Yella produced Easy-E’s debut studio album Eazy-Duz-It as well as all three N.W.A. albums. He has produced for artists such as J.J. Fad, Yomo & Maulkie, The D.O.C., Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, and more.
DJ Yella released his debut solo studio album One Mo Nigga ta Go in 1996, which was certified Gold. After his debut album, he retired from music and worked as a porn film director and producer for 12 years, producing over 300 films. He released his follow-up album, West Coastin’, in 2011.
In 2015, DJ Yella was portrayed by Neil Brown, Jr. in the film Straight Outta Compton, which detailed the creation and evolution of gangster rap as a whole and the roller coaster ride associated with the creation and subsequent takeover of supergroup N.W.A. The film ranks as Universal’s 6th top opening of the year and represents the best R-rated August film opening ever.
